Hard Marchen In Osaka

I found this CD at Encore Recordings, the best destination for used CDs and vinyl in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I had never heard of any of the bands at that time. I don’t even remember why I picked it up for listening, I guess it looked strange enough to give it a try. When I picked up the headphones, I was instantly hooked and did not have to think twice to buy it. The label that put out this CD is Nazna Oiran, and it was their first release. Unfortunately, the Nazna Oiran website has disappeared, but their ingenious promo text has survived. Here it is:
Oosaka brand new shit mat compilation cd!!!!!
fast! noisy breaks! wicked up! toxic junk! folk passion! cock out! so compile the music freaks they wood in osaka man!
compiled: tsutsumi katsuki, OVe-NaXx, XENAPHON, gulpass gulpass lululululu, BAIYON, OORUTAICHI, maruosa, ZUINOSIN, KA4U, RUN-DOM.sea, EXEDEXEX
This sums up the music on this compilation much better than I ever could. If it does not appeal to you, don’t read any further, sanity will not be restored.
In the meantime I found out that OVe-NaXX (aka Isao Sano) is a very prolific musician, who released among lots of other stuff a split CD with Donna Summer (aka Jason Forrest). OVe-NaXX is often classified as breakcore, but that label does not even begin to describe the madness. He also runs the label accelmuzhik, through which you might be able to get this CD. (I am not quite sure because the site uses Flash and Japanese galore, both of which defy me.)
I also found a little more info on Zuinosin, described as a “3-man new wave anarchy group”, and on OORUTAICHI, who contributes a track which sounds like demented Japanese folklore sung by aliens under water. It might be the sanest and most accessible track on the CD, though. About the rest of the artists I know virtually nothing, and I would be grateful for any info. Google helps only so much if all of the search results are in Japanese…
Let me try to describe the music in more detail. Tsutsumi Katsuki starts out the CD with a great noise track with weird psychedelic samples, then OVe-NaXx does schizophrenic videogame raggamuffin which sounds like The Borg took over the samplers. XENAPHON follows with a short violent hardcore piece, after which gulpass gulpass lululululu delivers my absolute favorite track -lu. It starts out with violent distorted voice samples, and evolves into a gentle noisy drum’n'bass frenzy. You have to hear it to believe it. BAIYON follows with a noisy pulsating feedback piece, then OORUTAICHI’s nearly traditional piece described above, and maruosa starting off with something that sounds like Bad Brains, only to evolve into the soundtrack to a broken arcade game about torturing little babies with meathooks before cutting them into slices with a lightsaber. After that comes ZUINOSIN sounding like a mix between The Pop Group and the Ruins, KA4U with more violent videogame breakcore, and RUN-DOM.sea with a slower piece, starting out like a horror soundtrack, adding a beat and again broken arcade sounds. EXEDEXEX closes off this excellent compilation with a short chaotic track with distorted voice, distorted guitars, and disturbing unidentifiable noises over relatively normal vintage videogame music.
This would make an excellent Christmas present for your in-laws. COCK OUT!

i forgot about when you showed this cd to me until just now.. i will have to write down the names of the artists you mentioned and see if any of the local record stores here carry their stuff. it seems pretty likely that i could find their stuff at one of the two pretty comprehensive stores in kyoto, but if not, osaka has ALL that shit.
i will try to remember to come back here and check out what’s brewing regularly (that is, if you update it regularly, har har).
